I still sleep with my head torch by the bed, I'm way too hot in the house and have to open the windows, even in this weather. I still wake up and for a brief moment think I have to walk 25 miles and feel strange when I'm not wearing my trail gear.

On the plus side, it's great not to be cold for 7 days at a time. Promises from the locals when I was last down here of milder weather, higher temperatures and snow that doesn't come to much haven't, well, come to much.

Chris, Nick and I left Cascade Locks on Tuesday 2nd November confident of polishing of the remaining 330 or so miles and being rewarded with the label of a 'Thru-hiker'. There was no way I was going to attempt this in the dark, especially with some ominous clouds rolling in. A little light from the moon bounced around my camp, not enough to see so I switched on my head torch and carried on supping on some hot chocolate.

Oregon is proving good walking. There is minimal elevation loss and gain, the path is well trodden and soft underfoot. We have just come through a cold spell which saw night time temperatures dip down to freezing level, ice crystals decorating our tents in the morning.

It wasn't intentional. I needed to 'crush miles' (as it is referred to out here) in order to get to Ashland. I had left Pockets in Etna, he had serious toothache and was going to go to Portland to get it seen to, we arranged to meet up in Ashland. To be honest, I had forgotten Dozer's name which is no reflection on him, just a reflection on my failing memory. Walker I didn't recognise as he was horizontal and his beard had sprouted alarmingly since we last saw each other at Kennedy Meadows.

It seemed innocent enough, the tributary was flowing fast but it wasn't deep, a good assortment of stones and boulders meant it should have been an easy crossing. I feel like I'm on a roller coaster, high one minute, low the next. On top of the world in the morning, at the bottom in the afternoon. I'm not talking about my emotions (surprisingly), I'm referring to the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Quite possibly the most majestic, awe inspiring, breath taking piece of landscape that was ever created. This is the result of only 4 days hiking in the desert. Salt and minerals are lost at an alarming rate and end up staining your clothing like this. I have to replace these once every couple of days with a sachet mix of electrolytes and similar minerals. The big 500 miles completed! I didn't realise until I was virtually on top of it and happened to check the map. No great ceremony, Hojo was with me and we shook hands in typical bloke fashion.

"Well done Canadian", he said (he refers to me as the Canadian for some reason, something to do with the fact that I'm a foreigner).

This looks worse that it is - really! The two toes on the end of my right food have given me a few problems since the start but believe it or not, this is the healing process. My new shoes are bedding in and my toes now have far more freedom inside to move about as opposed to being crushed by my old ones. Views and panoramas to die for. I was expecting hot, arid and dry desert in southern California but it is continuing to surprise me. Sand gives way to scrub, surrendering to rocky outcrops reminding me of old western movies.
